Oleg Torsunov

Propaganda:

Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Oleg Torsunov has systematically denied the fact of Russian military aggression, attributing its crimes a positive spiritual interpretation. In his lectures he explains that Ukrainians dying from Russian missiles are receiving "Krishna's mercy" — He is "building them a little house in the spiritual world." He calls on Vaishnavas to renounce Ukrainian identity and "stay away" from defending their country against the aggressor. He criticizes the Revolution of Dignity, framing it as a spiritual sin and Ukraine's suffering as deserved punishment.

General position on the war in Ukraine:

Torsunov does not acknowledge the war as Russia's aggression against a sovereign Ukraine. He interprets the deaths of Ukrainians from missile strikes as "Krishna's will" and a manifestation of His mercy, giving victims "better conditions for spiritual practice." He urges his followers to renounce national identity and not defend their country, imposing the role of a passive "transcendental observer." Through his "Blagost" project he de facto recognizes the occupation of Ukrainian territories.

✖ SIGNS OF CRIME

Public support for Russia's aggression against Ukraine

Oleg Torsunov publicly denies Russia's military aggression against Ukraine, attributing its crimes a positive spiritual interpretation.

  • Justification of civilian deaths: victims of Russian missile strikes are presented as fortunate individuals receiving "a little house in the spiritual world" or "better conditions for spiritual practice."
  • Denial of Ukrainian identity: urges his followers to renounce Ukrainian identity and not defend their country from the aggressor.
  • De facto recognition of occupation: on blagost.online, occupied Ukrainian cities (Donetsk, Mariupol, Sevastopol, Simferopol, Yalta, Yevpatoria, Dzhankoi, Feodosiya) are listed as Russian; Kherson was listed as "Russia" from February to November 2022.
  • Physical presence on occupied territories: has systematically visited occupied Crimea since 2014; the visits are documented on the official site torsunov.ru.
  • Deliberate concealment of Crimea visits: prior to the full-scale invasion, he intentionally avoided publicizing his visits to occupied Crimea to prevent complications with his entry into Ukraine; in 2016 he was added to the "Myrotvorets" database in connection with this activity.
  • Entry into Ukraine facilitated by Ryabikin: until 2022, Torsunov entered Ukraine with the assistance of Pavlo and Halyna Ryabikin — Pavlo Ryabikin served as director of Boryspil International Airport (2017–2020) and head of the State Customs Service of Ukraine (2020–2022); documented lectures include Kyiv (15.12.2021) and Kharkiv (10.08.2021).

The totality of these actions forms a consistent narrative denying the aggressive nature of Russia's war against Ukraine.

Facilitation or incitement to war crimes

Torsunov's lectures — in which he justifies the deaths of Ukrainian civilians from Russian missiles and calls for passivity before the aggressor — create spiritual-ideological grounds for the continuation of Russia's military aggression.

  • Theological justification of war crimes: by calling the deaths of Ukrainians "Krishna's will" and "His mercy," Torsunov cultivates among his followers a tolerance for Russia's war crimes.
  • Suppression of the will to resist: calls to "stay away" and "not take sides" are aimed at depriving Ukrainians of spiritual support for legitimate self-defense.
  • Spiritual legitimization of occupation: systematic visits to occupied Crimea under the guise of religious activity, and the labeling of occupied cities as Russian, de facto support Russia's occupation.

Nuremberg Principles (Principles VI(a) and VII, 1950): public spiritual justification of an aggressive war and its victims may be classified as complicity in a crime against peace. The use of religious authority to demobilize opponents of aggression lends such actions particular social danger.

Spiritual responsibility towards followers

A religious leader who explains the deaths of civilians in missile strikes as "Krishna's will" and "God's mercy" grossly violates the basic principles of spiritual mentorship.

Replacing the principle of ahimsa (non-violence) with theological justification of killing, using religious authority to promote passivity before an aggressor, and depriving followers of the right to self-determination and the defense of their country — constitutes a betrayal of the spiritual tradition and an abuse of disciples' trust.

Manipulation of religion in the interests of an aggressor state

Oleg Torsunov, with a network of Blagost clubs in over 100 CIS cities and an audience of over 1.2 million, has turned Vedic preaching into an instrument for advancing the interests of the aggressor.

  • Theological cover for war crimes: Torsunov's lectures create among his followers the illusion that Russian aggression is not a political crime but a spiritual process managed by Krishna.
  • Neutralization of anti-war sentiment: calls for "love of all" and renunciation of national identity effectively serve to demobilize opponents of the war in Russian-speaking communities across the CIS and Ukraine.
  • Propaganda through a global offline network: Blagost clubs in Ukraine and the CIS have become a channel for spreading propaganda narratives in the format of religious lectures.

Potential legal violations

The actions of Oleg Torsunov fall under the following legal norms:

  • Article 436² of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — justification, recognition as lawful, denial of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine: lectures in which Ukrainian deaths from Russian missiles are explained as "Krishna's will" and "spiritual benefit" constitute this offense.
  • Article 110 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — encroachment on Ukraine's territorial integrity: the public listing of occupied Ukrainian territories (Crimea, Donetsk, Mariupol, Kherson, and others) as Russian on the official blagost.online resource constitutes this offense.
  • Articles 204¹–204² of the Code of Administrative Offences and Article 332² of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — illegal crossing of Ukraine's state border and violation of entry/exit procedures for temporarily occupied territory: systematic visits to occupied Crimea since 2014.
  • Article 20 of the ICCPR — prohibition of war propaganda: lectures in which military aggression is de facto theologically justified constitute war propaganda prohibited by an international treaty binding on Russia as a State Party to the ICCPR.

The totality of documented actions provides legal grounds for criminal proceedings in Ukraine. Ukraine is entitled to seek an international investigation into Torsunov's activities through Interpol or within a future special tribunal on Russia's crimes of aggression against Ukraine.

Conclusion

Oleg Gennadyevich Torsunov (Audarya Dhama das) has through his actions:

  • systematically denied Russia's military aggression against Ukraine, attributing its crimes a false spiritual interpretation;
  • theologically justified the deaths of Ukrainian civilians from Russian missile strikes;
  • de facto recognized the occupation of Ukrainian territories through the official blagost.online resource;
  • systematically visited occupied Crimea since 2014, reinforcing Russia's de facto control over the territory;
  • called on his followers to remain passive in the face of aggression, weakening the will to resist;
  • should be publicly condemned by the international Vaishnava community and ISKCON governing bodies.

EXAMPLES OF STATEMENTS

«Одна девушка, у ней на Украине ракетой уничтожили дом, родственников, работу она потеряла... Я говорю: потому, что Он вам домик строит. Когда у него Кришна всё отнимает, Он ему даёт домик наверху сразу.»

A girl — in Ukraine, a missile destroyed her home, her relatives, she lost her job there. At the lecture she asks me: why all this? I was living normally. Why did the Lord take everything away from me? I say: Well, you know why? She says: I know, but I want to ask you, for confirmation. I say: because He built you a little house there. She says: I know. Yes, I feel it — He not only built her a house there, but also gave knowledge of it in her heart. Even when a devotee loses something here — IT MEANS IT MUST BE SO! Because he loses here, gains there, and also receives knowledge of where his house will be. When Krishna takes everything from him, He immediately gives him a house upstairs. Where is the better house — here or there? And she was so happy: thank you, I thought so! Because Krishna had already given her that knowledge before. [Sanskrit verse] One who is engaged in devotional service is already in this life freed from the reactions of good and bad deeds. Therefore dedicate your life to devotional service, which is the crown of all activity.

This is what the Bolsheviks dreamed of — it has been fulfilled. Krishna consciousness is the crown of all activity. What did they dream of? They dreamed of eternal happiness. They wanted to build a bright future.

«When the world's influence becomes very cruel — that is how fate works, the energy of fate becomes cruel — even Vaishnavas lose their minds. They begin to identify themselves as Russians, Ukrainians, Europeans, and hate those who are not like them. Vaishnavas start doing this — not just ordinary people, but Vaishnavas. This means they have lost their minds. Sarva dharma parityajya mam ekam sharanam vraja — abandon all these ideas. You are simply a soul, an eternal soul! What Russians?! What Ukrainians?! What Americans?! You are an eternal soul! Love everyone! Don't get involved in all of this. Stay away from this madness!»

«A missile hit a devotee's home in Ukraine and he burned alive. On one hand, it seems unjust. But on the other hand — this devotee was no longer practicing so seriously, and the Lord took his life to give him better conditions for spiritual practice.»

The Lord ultimately decides everything. The Lord is the most merciful. He knows exactly where each person needs to go. Recently — literally just yesterday or the day before — a missile hit a devotee's home in Ukraine and he burned alive. On one hand, it seems unjust. But on the other hand — this devotee was no longer practicing so seriously, and the Lord took his life to give him better conditions for spiritual practice. And he has now gone along the solar path to paradise. There, he will have a very good opportunity to engage in spiritual practice.

«Devotees should not figure out who is right in these wars and who is not. They should love all people equally, not get into the details of politics, not take anyone's side.»

THE BEGINNING OF THE LORD'S MISSION — Audarya Dhama Das, New York, 27.06.2023

Timecode: 1:27:56

And the only thing that Vaishnavas need right now is called kindness. We must learn to be kind to everyone. We must not divide. Right now people are under the strong influence of a force that is spreading throughout the world. The polarity of thinking is intensifying. Some believe the truth is here, others — the truth is there. The whole world is splitting into parts. But devotees must not engage in this. They must not figure out who is right in these wars and who is not. They must love all people equally. Not get into the details of politics, not take anyone's side, but preach kindness towards all people. Vaishnavas need to try to stay together. There is no need to divide into Russians, Ukrainians, Americans. We need to stay together. Love one another. And if devotees have become embittered in their hearts — we must love them too, forgive them. Because there is a reason — someone's father was killed, someone's mother, someone's home was destroyed. Devotees begin to get angry. Hatred flares up in their hearts. Because that is how fate works. We must not divide.

«When I come to Ukraine I say: "When will you finally accept your government? How long can this go on?" — "Well, we'll overthrow it a couple more times and then accept it!" — "Well, ten more years of suffering then. Maybe it's time to simply accept, love and endure?"»

You Must Live in Peace. Prophetic Words about Russia. Torsunov O.G.

Our job now is to pass our own exams. Everyone who will be crying out during this time, everyone who will be getting angry, everyone who will be undermining and destroying the way of life that currently exists in Russia — all these people will receive their punishment. Without any doubt. And they will be to blame for what will happen here next. But all the people who will endure, accept, love, believe, protect — all these people will be heroes. And they will be glorified in our country, these people. As it always has been, and always will be. There is no other way in this world. The same applies to other countries. When I come to Ukraine, I say: when will you finally accept your government. How long can this go on? When will you accept your fate? "Well, we'll overthrow it a couple more times and then accept it." "Well, ten more years of suffering then. Maybe that's enough already? Maybe it's time to simply start accepting, loving, enduring?" Everything begins inside a person, you understand? We have feelings. When they burn — "I cannot endure injustice" — that is your own fate. You cannot endure it. When a person cannot endure injustice, it means he cannot endure his own fate. Jesus Christ accepted His cross. And moreover, He was given a choice: they said "if you want, choose something else, we will not punish you." "No," He said, "I choose my cross." And He carried it. He showed us an example: choose your cross — and that is why He rose. You understand? Because He chose, He won. Do not reject your fate. Here is your fate — why are you rejecting it? This is your fate. It is working. Accept it, carry it, be happy as a result. But if a person does not want to accept it, he will continue to suffer.
